METHODIQA - Development of a quality assurance methodology for Renewable Heat Systems by means of intelligent operational monitoring

The focus of this project is on quality assurance for heat supply systems that combine renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Main objective is the elaboration of the scientific and technical basis for a diagnostics system that aims at cost-effective but high-quality, computer-aided surveillance of system operation of heat supply systems. METHODIQA combines two important renewable heat technologies (solar thermal and biomass); both renewable-only solutions as well as popular combinations of renewable and non-renewable technologies are investigated. Several stakeholders are showing interest in the current project: funding bodies, plant operators and property developers (involved by means of service contracts), and last but not least also the Austrian industry organizations of the two involved renewable heat technologies who agree to co-finance the project.

Within this project the development of a solar thermal collector for medium temperature (temperature range 80 to 120 deg C) and especially for large scale solar thermal applications is planned. Thereby a completely new concept of vacuum tube collectors in combination with conceptual new hydraulic junctions allowing easy connections of single tubes in series in order to get long thermal lengths will be developed.

SOLAR PROCESS HEAT FOR PRODUCTION AND ADVANCED APPLICATIONS

Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) is currently at the early stages of development. Less than 100 operating solar thermal systems for process heat are reported worldwide, with a total capacity of about 24 MWth (34,000 m²). Most of these systems are of an experimental nature, and are relatively small scale. However, there is great potential for market and technological developments, as 28% of the overall energy demand in the EU27 countries originates in the industrial sector, majority of this is heat in the temperature range below 250°C.
