Solar heating systems are used, besides heating water for swimming pools, primarily to provide domestic hot water and for space heating. Alongside these areas, new markets are opening up in the fields of solar cooling and air conditioning as well as in solar heat for industrial processes.
A total of around 160 million square meters of solar collectors with a total power of around 112 GWth were in use around the world at the end of 2005.
Austria, with its approx. 400,000 solar thermal systems covering a total area of 3.3 million m˛ (2.3 GWth), is one of the world leaders in solar energy use.
AEE INTEC supports a wide market introduction of thermal solar plants by improving and developing new collectors, components and systems.
Significant focuses in component development to date have been the improvement of flat-plate collectors, facade collectors, parabolic trough collectors for the medium temperature range and the development of optimised storage tanks.
In numerous national and international projects, significant advances have been made in systems technology e.g. in the stagnation behaviour of plants, in solar combisystems for domestic hot water preparation and space heating and in systems for the provision of hot water for multi-residence buildings. The development of plants for industrial heat requirements is a new focal area.
