Recently, geothermal technologies have gained interest in many European countries. Both shallow and deep geothermal technologies are an important pillow regarding the transformation of the heat sector. In Austria the potential of geothermal energy is immense. The exploitation of shallow geothermal potentials combined with heat pumps, has increased a lot, showing several projects implemented to provide heating and cooling in buildings and quarters. <\/p>\n\n

Deep geothermal lags its feasible technical potential in Austria. Even if there are activities in a couple of Austrian cities (e.g. Vienna and Graz) to exploit geothermal heat, existing political regulations hinder the implementation of projects and therefore the realignment of politics is overdue. At the same time geothermal probe fields, aquifers and caverns provide the possibility to seasonally store geothermal heat and other heat sources in a cost-effective way. <\/p>\n\n

The current issue of \u201cnachhaltige technologien\u201d provides an overview of national and international activities regarding ups and downs of geothermal heat usage and geothermal heat storage.<\/p>\n\n
