Master thesis: Laboratory setup and Modelling of High Temperature Heat Storage

AEE INTEC

AEE – Institute for Sustainable Technologies (AEE INTEC) is a non-university research institute founded in 1988. AEE INTEC currently employs around 80 scientists from eleven nations and contin-uously awards dissertations, master’s theses and internships. AEE INTEC works in the fields of “Buildings”, “Cities and Networks”, “Technology Development” and “Industrial Systems” on funda-mental and application-oriented research in national and international R&D projects in cooperation with universities, colleges, other research institutions and industry.

Research Project

In contrast to conventional batteries, which use chemical processes to store energy, the Carnot battery is based on storing electrical energy in the form of heat. Excess electricity is converted into heat, for example by means of a resistance heater or a high-temperature heat pump (power to heat). This is stored at temperatures of around 100 °C to 1200 °C in a thermal energy storage system (TES) and converted back into electricity and/or used directly as heat during periods of high de-mand. The heat can be stored in the natural soil, for example. Material characteristics and an un-derstanding of the heat transfer processes in the soil at high temperatures are required to design the storage system. For this reason, investigations are to be carried out in the laboratory and with models.

Master thesis

The tasks of this thesis include:

  • Literature research on material values of soil types (e.g. thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity) at high temperatures
  • Support in setting up and operating a measuring system to determine the thermal proper-ties of soil samples
  • Development of the measurement strategy with regard to parameter studies to describe processes of moisture and heat transport
  • Evaluation of the measurement results

We expect…

  • A structured, solution-oriented, and preferably independent working style
  • Motivation and reliability
  • Very good knowledge of German or business fluent in written and spoken English
  • Familiarization with the soil physical processes of heat and moisture transport

We offer…

  • Paid master’s thesis with close involvement in an ongoing research project
  • Support from experienced employees, competent technical support
  • Duration: around 6 months, starting immediately
