AWKST – Waste heat register Styria

The Climate and Energy Strategy Styria 2030 including the Action Plan 2019-2021 forms the basis for Styria’s energy and climate policy. Energy efficiency is an important field of action for achieving the goals. The use of waste heat is an essential component here. The Action Plan 2019-2021 provides for the evaluation and further development of the Styrian Waste Heat Register.

With regard to the development of possible new waste heat sources and potentials, the Waste Heat Register from 2012 is to be updated and made available to the public.

The project consortium was commissioned to update and reissue the Waste Heat Register. For this purpose, bottom-up methods (direct contact with companies via questionnaires and on-site visits as well as analyses of publicly available environmental reports and emission databases) as well as top-down analyses (statistical evaluation of branch related benchmarks) are applied. The project is divided into 4 modules:

  • Module 1 – Identification of potential waste heat sources (theoretical potential) in Styria.
  • Module 2 – Elaboration of the available technical potential
  • Module 3 – Georeferencing of waste heat sources and their characteristics in the GIS Styria
  • Module 4 – Conception of a platform for waste heat utilisation incl. mode of operation

While in Module 1&2 mainly the surveys and data analysis are carried out, in Module 3&4 the results are made accessible to the public and relevant stakeholders in order to integrate the Styrian waste heat sources into future energy concepts.
