EDIH Applied CPS – Applied Cyber Physical Systems

The EDIH “Applied-CPS” is one of four European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) approved in Austria and will offer more than 230 tailored services and services for access to cyber-physical systems (CPS) for companies from fall 2022. SMEs in particular will be able to use these services in an uncomplicated and largely fully funded manner.

The support services offered focus on essential technological topics in the context of cyber-physical systems:

  • Sensors and embedded systems
  • Smart System Integration
  • Digital twins and data exploitation
  • Blockchain and distributed ledger technology

Technology of the future

Cyber-physical systems extend physical subsystems through a massive amount of software and information technology in cyberspace (cloud). They thereby ensure, among other things, networking, 24/7 availability, resilience, etc. – and enable the handling of complex systems and infrastructures. For Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems therefore play a central role.

However, the technological scope and complexity of developing and integrating these systems is immense. It therefore represents a significant barrier for start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises when it comes to creating and using CPS.

Austrian technology leaders as a point of contact

The new EDIH “Applied-CPS” aims to significantly improve this situation as a central contact point for interested SMEs at regional, national and European level. A broad-based consortium of Austrian technology leaders has come together for this purpose.

In line with the diverse potentials of CPS, a considerable need for the topics of sensors and embedded systems, as well as system integration, has been identified, especially in the construction industry, production and mobility. In addition, data utilization and blockchain technologies are seen as the big drivers for digitalization. This specific focus is underpinned by the heterogeneous composition of the consortium.

Digital product innovation in the blink of an eye

Companies can make themselves future-ready for new technologies in three simple steps:

  1. “Initial discussion”: low-threshold clarification of the basic challenge.
  2. “Potential analysis”: analysis of support possibilities and solution approaches.
  3. “Implementation”: implementation of the tailored measures.

The EDIH “Applied-CPS” with its focus on cyber-physical systems thus starts where a major gap in Austria was recently identified by the Austrian Research Council. According to this, there is a risk that Austria will not be able to catch up with Europe’s leading innovation countries in the areas of digitization and start-ups by 2030. The EDIH “Applied-CPS” will counteract this.

Fit for the future, ready for new technological challenges – with the “Applied-CPS”, Austrian SMEs have a strong partner community at their side on their way to the top in innovation! It will start in the fall of 2022 – services will be widely communicated and offered accordingly towards the end of the year.
