Green Brewery – Zero fossil CO2 emissions for breweries

Innovative energy concepts depending on the production capacity, the site and the products have been developed in case studies and possibilities of production without fossil fuels have been demonstrated applying energy efficiency, heat integration and a combination of renewable energy sources.

Beside concepts for three breweries (Göss, Puntigam, Schladming) a “concept for Green Breweries” was developed as a central project result. It is an excel tool for breweries with the following focus:

  • fast comparison of the most important energy benchmarks of the overall production and of specific production areas
  • simple calculation of a detailed energy balance fort he brewing process
  • Clearly-arranged allocation of important optimisation measures to production processes and energy supply units
  • Calculation of the potential for heat recovery
  • precise possibilities for the integration or renewable energy (solar thermal, biogas, biomass, geothermal)
  • Compendium of the „best available technologies“ for the production processes
  • Calculation of the potential of energy production from the own residues of a brewery (e.g. biogas from spent grain)

Die possibilities for calculations in the „concept for Green breweries“ are based on the technical equipment that is found in the 3 case studies. Therefore the most important equipment of the Austrian brewing industry is taken account of.
