IEA IETS Annex XI – Industry based biorefineries

IEA IETS Annex XI was initiated in 2008. In 2020, within the task “Decision Making and Ex Ante Research” and in Steering Committee meetings the following four tasks have been developed:

  1. Energy system analyses in industrial biorefineries
  2. GHG emission reduction of industrial biorefineries (lead AEE INTEC)
  3. Application of artificial intelligence and digitalization to increase the competitiveness of biorefineries
  4. Circular economy of industrial biorefineries

The aim of the Austrian contribution is to develop concepts for industrial biorefineries with maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing energy intensity based on case studies. The methods and tools for the assessment of combined resource and energy efficiency and socio-economic aspects for industrial biorefineries will be integrated into predictive decision support systems and evaluated in terms of their suitability based on case studies. The Austrian contribution to international activities pursues the goal of identifying value chains and process concepts for Austrian companies that enable high product value creation, lead to a realization of the circular economy goals and minimize GHG emissions in the production of biobased products. These goals, also through the use of digitization tools, are anchored in the international activities within the framework of the Annex XI Steering Committee and the development of further tasks.
