The klimaaktiv Buildings Program
The klimaaktiv Buildings Program has been setting standards for energy-efficient, sustainable, and future-oriented construction in Austria for two decades. The foundation for this is the klimaaktiv Building Standard, combined with clear recommendations and guidelines for decarbonizing the heating sector. klimaaktiv Buildings has become a key framework for the construction and real estate industry. More than 2,200 buildings demonstrate how future-oriented building quality can be successfully combined with practical solutions.
The klimaaktiv Building Standard as a Seal of Approval
The goal of the klimaaktiv Buildings Program is efficient, decarbonized, and climate-resilient buildings. The basis for this is the klimaaktiv Building Standard. It serves as a benchmark and quality assurance tool for the construction industry and public administration.
The klimaaktiv Building Standard, as a seal of approval from the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism (BMWET), ensures:
- Energy efficiency: klimaaktiv buildings are demonstrably very energy-efficient, designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and long-term costs (heating energy demand, materials, primary energy demand, fossil-free heating).
- Future-proofing for the real estate industry: With its clearly defined requirements for energy efficiency and renewable energy, the building standard supports implementation in accordance with EU directives (e.g., EPBD, EU Taxonomy, or EED III). The klimaaktiv building standard is therefore a strategic tool for future-proof real estate development.
- Economic relief for the construction industry: The free klimaaktiv quality seal from the German Federal Government enables an industry under significant cost pressure to plan and implement quality projects.
- Neutral and independent: The klimaaktiv building standard is a federal service for the real estate industry: independent, product-neutral, and without private sector interest.
- Quality assurance for developers and real estate companies: The klimaaktiv building standard forms the basis of the in-house Holistic Building Program standard of BIG and ARE buildings and has already been implemented hundreds of times. Numerous other well-known companies use klimaaktiv.
- Practical knowledge and teaching: Clear guidelines and its widespread application bring practical knowledge into teaching and continuing education. Numerous universities and universities of applied sciences teach the klimaaktiv building standard, thereby building essential expertise.
- Decarbonization toolbox: klimaaktiv buildings provides a comprehensive set of practical tools, guidelines, and technical information for planning and consulting in the areas of heating, ventilation, cooling, and hot water preparation.
- Simple quality assurance for the public sector: Application in housing subsidies of Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria, and Vorarlberg; in the Energy Efficiency Fund, the UFI, the Austrian Hotel Bank, and in the Ecolabel Guideline 49 for real estate funds; klimaaktiv Bronze for depreciation allowances; application in municipalities to comply with EED III (Energy Efficiency Directive III). The subsidies from the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism (BMWET) are supported by practical guidelines – from renovation roadmaps to portfolio analysis.
- Innovation driver in the sector: A strong network of professionals, developers, cities and municipalities, as well as stakeholders from business, technology, and administration, contributes to successful further development. The standard thus acts as an innovation driver: New technologies, materials, and smart building concepts are quickly implemented in practice.
