The subject of the project is the preparation of a master plan for the expansion and decarbonization of the district heating supply in the municipality of Kapfenberg in accordance with the energy and climate policy principles and objectives according to the legally valid sectoral concept of energy (SKE). As a target within the master planning, the requirements for highly energy efficient and renewable-based district heating systems according to §5 number (4) DVO (Durchführungs-VO zum Stmk. Wohnbauförderungsgesetz 1993) shall be exceeded.

The project contents include a status assessment and analysis of the Kapfenberg central district network, the evaluation of network expansion potentials, the determination of annual duration curves, energy and life cycle assessments as well as the heat production costs including a thermal-hydraulic network model for the status quo and for agreed scenarios. Within the scenario investigations, new alternative generation capacities (focus: waste heat, biomass), changes in heat sales due to network densification, network expansion and building renovations, transport pipelines for the decoupling of industrial waste heat as well as adapted storage capacities and corresponding storage and load management will be addressed.

The results of the master planning will be made available to the municipality of Kapfenberg for consideration in ongoing urban development and spatial planning processes in a suitable textual and graphic form.
