In the frame of the SolSorpDry project, the first prototype of a drying plant was built that guarantees high product quality with the lowest possible energy input. It can be adapted for different drying materials. The energy supply for the plant shall be covered 100 percent from renewable energy sources. To this end, options for solar thermal energy, heat recovery and photovaltaics and their combination with a sorption storage system are being investigated.

In July 2023, the first series of tests started with the drying goods cornflower, basil, peppermint, thyme, and garlic. Extensive knowledge was gained about the characteristics of the plants during drying and a positive drying result was achieved for each crop. For example, the drying time of cornflower was halved. The quality of the end products was positively evaluated by the experts of the Experimental Station for Special Crops of the Province of Styria in Wies.
