ATES Vienna – Vienna Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage

The Vienna ATES project will address the identification and characterisation of available aquifer resources for integration into the Austrian district heating sector for seasonal storage of renewable heat.

The Austrian federal government has set the goal of Austria being climate neutral by 2040. This poses major challenges, especially for the industrial sector, as large and long-term investments are common in this sector. Therefore, investments in climate-neutral technologies are necessary as soon as possible to avoid sunk costs and lock-in effects. Stable framework conditions are necessary to enable these investments. In addition to the danger of “carbon leakage”, “green leakage” is also increasingly becoming an economic risk. It describes the danger of companies migrating as they find only inadequate framework conditions for a transformation toward climate neutrality in their home countries. Such framework conditions can only be created if the impact of innovative energy technologies for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in industry has been quantified and is well understood.

Bio-Net Know – Know-how development to transform biomass-based local heating grids into a sustainable energy supply system

BTTAB – Broad-based test of energy-efficient demonstration buildings with thermally activated building components

The aim of BTTAB is to examine applications of the technology of building component activation on the basis of extensive monitoring of Austrian properties and to evaluate and compare the pilot projects with the help of suitable evaluation criteria. KISeKoPo – Smart wastewater treatment plant: Activating sector coupling potential through digitization

Developing a holistic concept for a digital twin that also includes networking beyond the system boundaries of a single sewage treatment plant in order to enable new possibilities for sector coupling is a time-consuming and labor-intensive undertaking. Even if the potential of a digital twin of a wastewater treatment plant is enormous at first glance – a detailed assessment of the realistically achievable benefit under the actual conditions in the wastewater treatment plant is not possible on the basis of the information currently available.
